Net Billing Tariff (NBT)

Net Billing

The Net Billing Tariff (NBT), also commonly referred to as NEM 3 is replacing PG&E’s Net Energy Metering (NEM) programs, known as NEM 2.0 and NEM 1. NBT is a new program for solar customers which determines compensation rates for the electricity generated by solar panels and then exported back to the grid. Unlike NEM which calculated the customers compensation over a year, customers under NBT will have their compensation rates tabulated on a month-to-month basis.

Rooftop solar customers’ whose system is producing more electricity than they are consuming can earn money for selling this extra electricity back to the grid. The value of the electricity will be determined by the Avoided Cost Calculator, or ACC which has different rates for every hour of the year. Customers can maximize their earning by storing the excess energy in their battery during less valuable time periods and then exporting the stored energy back to the grid during high-value hours.

Net Billing Tariff Rates

NBT Rates

Net Billing Tariff rates are based on the value determined by the export compensation chart, seen here. To prevent customers from being surprised by a large annual bill, payment for consumption charges will be due monthly. In months when customers have excess solar electricity that they have sent back to the grid, resulting in bill credits, the credits will roll over to following months.

ACC

Net Billing Tariff rates are based on the value determined by the ACC for the electricity at the time in which the electricity is exported back to the grid. Customers consumption rates from the grid, will be offset by the credits they earn by the electricity they send back to the grid.
